How to prioritise in business?

Hello World

So before I get into the ‘why’ I’m doing / saying / referencing some form of content here, (which will most definitely be fluid in its entirety), bear with me...

A blog ‘they say’… errrrrm, I know what one is, and have definitely read a fair few in my time… but write one?!? I mean what have I got to say??

I then thought what is the official definition of a blog… cue Google. Ruler of all, settler of arguments, master of knowledge (ish!) and can be used as argumentative proof “Google said, therefore, ending in I win, or it has to be true” said up and down the UK! Admit it… you’ve used google to do at least one of the above! Anyway, the definition as powered by google is “a regularly updated website or web page, typically one run by an individual or small group, that is written in an informal or conversational style.”

“I can do that… easy!” I thought to myself.

How wrong could I have been?

The art of writing and talking half eloquently came easy enough to me. (Unlike a good friend of mine, who swears we were never at the same school, with the same teachers, at the same time..! To clarify… we were!! 🤣).

Anyway, months it has taken me to commit to a piece of writing I was ‘brave’ enough to add to my precious website. And I do mean brave enough. In my personal life I have reached the age and level of “I couldn’t give a tiny rats ass what people I didn’t love thought about me.” I genuinely don’t… believe me or not… but in my business, I was still finding myself. Understanding the many intricacies of heart and head when it comes to setting out on your own. I had fallen victim to procrastination.

During this time, I had also learned some hard lessons about my own business integrity, and had over shared with person X. Within days of person X and my so-called partnership on a project dissolving, rapidly deteriorating and leaving me thinking WTF has happened?? It became clear my intellectual property, my material, theory and words appearing across their campaigns and posts.

I was crushed for many reasons, I needed to develop some business armour of my own. Be more savvy somehow? I wasn’t sure how yet but it was happening.

So that is how I decided to go back through my career. Look at how I do what I do. What tips, techniques, fav tools do I use? How will I banish the imposter syndrome that had started to creep into my head, my dreams and thoughts when I should have been sleeping?

Kicking us off is one of my favourite tools…

If like me you had no idea where to start when setting up your own business, you probably ended up asking Google ‘steps to be taken when setting up a business’, or ‘how to set up a small business’, ‘starting a business checklist’ – the list goes on and you get the gist.

When planning a project of any description I always use the 4 Q’s…

There are multiple variations of the 4 Q’s, also known as the 4 quadrants or 4 windows. The principle is the same. As shown in the picture the best way is to write a list of everything you can think of around setting up your business.

Then you can separate this list in the 4 Q’s as shown in the above picture. This should help you prioritise where to start, and your progress should flow from there.

Another similar concept is ‘Big Rocks’ - https://youtu.be/fmV0gXpXwDU
This short video should help you when prioritising setting up your business and life in general. Set yourself clear targets and boundaries. The last thing you need to do is feel overwhelmed by any task at hand. Always break things down in to manageable bit sized chunks. Tick off items as you complete them. This will also give you a great sense of achievement.

Hope you found this useful. I will be posting more tips on how to get your business ducks in a row. 😊
